2023 / #113: Queen of Hearts
Love, betrayal, and ‘Undead’ medical students – this is what Celeste Wintergreen comes face-to-face with when she begins attending UofT’s medical school in 1847, posing as a man due to limitations in women’s education at the time. As Celeste progresses through her medical training, she is recruited by the ‘phantom’ of the university, Jack Islington, to assist his efforts to provide medical treatment to Toronto’s most underserved citizens. Jack – a medical student who died due to lack of access to medical care himself – leads a group of ‘Undead’ students who also met untimely ends, but share a common passion for doing good. Jack and Celeste’s friendship soon blossoms into a powerful romance, as he shows her a world she never had access to in the previous confines of life as an upper-class woman. Tragically, Celeste is later mortally wounded in a rebellion between Toronto’s rich and poor. Jack must now make the ultimate decision – perform a surgical technique that will cause him to die permanently but save Celeste, or allow Celeste to lose her life. Queen of Hearts is a story of doing what is right, fighting for love, and learning to let go. It’s a reminder that medicine is about more than simply building a name for ourselves, but about the patients we serve, and the incredible impact we can have in both our recognized and unrecognized efforts. |

February 19-22, 2020 When Olivia does not receive an acceptance from UofT’s medical school, she wonders if she needs to change herself in order to achieve her dreams. She meets Cam, an intimidatingly confident and impossibly productive newly accepted member of the class who can sense a burnout in her future if she doesn’t take some time for herself before starting medical school. The two hatch a plan where Olivia will take Cam’s place in the class for the first week of school to gather information about what makes a successful applicant, while Cam will travel and recharge from her years of relentless work to get into medicine. Of course, it’s not that simple. While Olivia tries to keep a low profile as “Cam”, the administration has a plan to gain greater insight into UofT’s medical students than ever before -- and things are about to get real. Well this isn't that, but it's still pretty good! Come out this year to be regaled with tales of heroism, heraldry, and something else that begins with the letter H. Horses maybe. Set in medieval times, a lone doctor - and his trustworthy companions - must cure the town of a mysterious blight that has encroached upon it. How else are you going to win the hand of a fair maiden betrothed to a king? It's pretty much the only way. And remember, all proceeds go to cancer research, so you should feel really really bad if you don't go. |

2010 // #99: Unbecoming Doctors
February 17-20, 2010 Getting into medical school is not easy. Getting back into medical school after being expelled for desecrating the Hippocratic Oath is pretty much impossible. Unless, of course, you have a group of friends who know a little something about blackmail. Will Orchid get a second chance at making the grade? And more importantly, will it be the sleaze-ball Maximillion or the naïve bumbling Pete who wins her heart at the end of this Hippocromantic tramedy… The show contains tasteful sexual content, necessary violence, cathartic profanities, and fart jokes. If this were a movie, it would be rated PG-13, at least. |

2009 // #98: Internuts
February 18-21, 2009 Gearing up for its 98th season, Daffydil is a musical production that raises funds for the Canadian Cancer Society. Since its inception in 1905, Daffydil has contributed over $500,000 to the deserving charity and has been recognized with the Canadian Cancer Society's Community Partner Award. What Daffydil is especially known for, however, is entertaining over 1500 guests each year with a fantastic and comical musical performance! The production has evolved from a small variety show into a full-fledged parody that includes acting, singing, music, and dancing. From directing to fundraising to script-writing, every aspect of the show is created by students from the Faculty of Medicine's departments of medicine, physical & occupational therapy, speech language pathology, biomedical communications, and medical radiation sciences. |

2006 - #95: A Reunion To Remember
February 22-25, 2006 Now in its 95th year, the Faculty of Medicine’s annual show Daffydil is produced, directed, written, & performed entirely by students in the Departments of Medicine, Physical & Occupational Therapy, Speech Language Pathology, Biomedical Communications, & Medical Radiation Sciences. All proceeds are directed to the Canadian Cancer Society, & in 2005 our donation exceeded $30,000. In 2006, Daffydil takes on the format of a murder-mystery & is sure to entertain its viewers through comedy, song, dance, & music. ‘Daffydil 2006: A Reunion to Remember’ promises to be memorable indeed, & is a show not to be missed! |
